A final project for my freshman year mechanical engineering class. In this project I employed my knowledge of SolidWorks to design and optimize a bridge such that it could withstand as much force being applied at its center as possible. I researched the various material properties of polylactic acid (PLA), and in combination with SolidWorks' Finite Element Analysis software, analyzed how the forces and stresses would be distributed throughout the bridge. I then used this information to further optimize my design. In the end, my bridge was able to hold 30.14 kgf (295.72 N or about 66.45 lbf), making it the second strongest bridge in the class.Â
